Biotool Food Analysis Kits
  • Manufactured under strict quality controls that provide reproducible results
  • No special equipment required
  • Gel form kits minimize handling steps
  • Easy-to-use, reliable, and sensitive DNA-based detection
  • Internal controls ensure clear, reliable results even with processed samples
  • Detect as little as 0.5 % of vertebrate material in a given sample
  • Tested with all vertebrate groups (amphibians, fish, birds, reptiles, mammals)
  • Offered with specific DNA purification kits -- specially designed to purify DNA from fresh and processed feed samples - to ensure the highest possible sample extaction for analysis

Biotools has developed several simple-to-use kits that sensitively detect DNA from various species in the highest possible variety of food samples. These kits are designed to identify goat, chicken, cow, sheep, pig, horse, and fish products in raw and processed foods. They are PCR --- based and specially designed to detect well conserved but distinct genetic signatures that are known to be stable enough to endure the usual processes involved in food manufacturing. For example, the Biofood mixed kit can even detect the origin of the milk used in cheese making.

Briefly summarized below are the main features of the kits. For more information, please go to the Biotools website.

BIOFOOD Kits --- real time vertebrate species detection and identification:

BIOFOOD Mixed

Facilitates meat analysis by identifing goat, chicken, cow, sheep, pig and horse using multiplex amplification, instead of more complicated RFLP analysis. This detection system is based on the stability of nucleic acid chains, that can endure the usual processes involved in food manufacturing. It can even detect the origin of the milk used in cheese making.

Species-specific sized amplifications from goat (lanes 1 and 7), chicken (2 and 8), cow (3 and 9), sheep (4 and 10), pig (5, 11 and 13), and horse (6, 12 and 14). DNA extractions were performed from fresh (lanes 13-14) and processed (lanes 1-12) samples, either cooked at 100ºC (lanes 1-6) or at 120ºC for 30 min (lanes 7-12). As seen, there is no dramatic decrease in amplification yields after heat processing and/or pressure treatment. 15-16: amplification blanks (no DNA). 17: isolation blank. M: 100 bp molecular ruler (Cat. No 31.006).

BIOFOOD Standard

Detects presence of material of vertebrate origin (mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish) in a given sample by means of exponential amplification of a very well conserved gene.

BIOFOOD Identification

Identifies the most common mammalian and bird species used for animal and human feed in this vertebrate material by DNA amplification-RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism).

BIOFOOD Mixed Kit

In a single reaction, detect and identify 6 species (horse, sheep, cow, pork, chicken, goat). This kit is useful for the fast check of feed composition in homogeneous samples

BIOFOOD QL ID Kits

Several kits that detects specific animal species: beef, pork, chicken, sheep, goat, or turkey.

BIOFISH Kits --- detect and identify fish species in raw and processed food

BIOFISH Cod

Detect and identifies the different gadiform species used in food in a given sample by means of exponential amplification of a very well conserved gene through evolution, followed by restriction digest (RFLP) in order to identify each species.

Amplification fragments belonging to 5 gadiform samples (on per lane in each panel) digested with 4 different restriction enzymes (A, B, C, and D). The marker is a 100-bp molecular ladder. After analysis of restriction patterns, it is seen that samples 2, 3 and 5 correspond to Gadus morhua (pattern in panel A), sample 1 corresponds to Gadus macrocephalus (in panel B), and sample 4 corresponds to Pollachius virens (pattern in panel C).

BIOFISH Salmon

Detect and identifies the different salmon species used in food in a given sample by means of exponential amplification of a very well conserved gene through evolution.

BIOFISH Seq Kits

  • Detect and identify specific fish species in food with sequence analysis of genetic markers.
  • Biofish SEQ Flat Fish Kit
  • Biofish SEQ Hake kit
  • Biofish SEQ Tuna kit
